SK Tom Hill, WA3RMX

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Tom Hill on August 25, 2025. Tom was a long term member of TERAC. He was the club Trustee for several years and was responsible for the club’s repeater K7AUO/R. Tom designed and built a pre-amplifier for the repeater that improved its range. He also added 1.3 GHz capability to the repeater. Tom was 74 years old when he passed away.

Thomas Cruikshank Hill III, February 6, 1951 – August 25, 2025
Tom was born in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up in Salisbury, Maryland. He had a lifelong curiosity about how things worked and an enduring love for electronics, ham radio, photography and music.
His love of radios began as a child, spending hours constructing Heathkit radios and other electronic gadgets. Tom enjoyed playing the drums and various percussion instruments, as well as photography and developing B&W photos. During high school he was the lighting engineer for the school theater and many of the community theater productions. He was the top technician at the local TV repair shop.
While attending Clemson University he worked at their radio station. After earning his BS degree in electrical engineering, Tom began his career as an Electronic Design Engineer at Tektronix in Beaverton, Oregon. Over the next 40+ years he worked at Tek in several areas: Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analyzers, and Microwaves & RF. During that time, he was named on nineteen patents and earned the recognition of Master Inventor.
His passion for amateur radio (WA3RMX) led him to TERAC (TEchnology Radio Amateur Club) and numerous activities with fellow radio and tech aficionados. He frequently participated in the American Radio Relay League. Tom also participated in EME or Earth-Moon-Earth competitions, a technique that uses the Moon’s surface as a reflector for microwave radio signals. Late at night, he and friends would drive to different mountain tops. One person bounced a signal off of the moon and it was received by their teammate on a different mountain top. Moon bounces were judged based on the distance between teammates’ mountain tops.
Tom traveled extensively in Europe, China, and India as a representative for Tektronix. He also served on a special committee for the Commerce Department. Tom continued playing timpani and various percussion instruments in several Portland area community orchestras.
In early 2023, he moved to the Boston area to be nearer to his family. He is survived by his siblings Cindy, James (Sherry) and Sarah (David) along with nieces and nephews: Sam, Max, Jennie, Alex and Isabelle.
Tom was a very kind person with a mischievous sense of humor. He was interested in others, always ready to help friends and family. He challenged himself and others to learn, create, and accomplish more. He will be missed by those that knew him. His ashes will be interred in the family plot in Maryland.
